Zambia or Bust!

Laura is on a mission...or hopes to be, come July 2011. Her high school, run by the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, conducts a trip each summer to a sister school, St. Francis High School in Malole, Zambia, Africa. The purpose of the trip is to make needed repairs to the school, and there is always a repainting project to tackle. It is also an opportunity for Bishop Guertin students to get to know the culture and life challenges of their Zambian brothers and sisters.

At a cost of $4,000, the trip is quite expensive but Laura is committed to her goal and hopes to raise the money through donations and fund-raising efforts. Laura says "I am passionate about this trip because I love to help people, having volunteered this summer in the oncology ward at St. Joseph Hospital in Nashua. It is a unique opportunity to experience a vastly different culture and the hardships endured in a country where a good education is achieved through great sacrifice. I hope to make new friends and effect a positive change in the lives of St. Francis students."

Now for the appeal (you knew it was coming :) Laura is attempting to get as many odd jobs as possible from friends and neighbors to help defray the cost of the trip. She and her friend/classmate, Dan, hope to conduct a fund-raiser or two over the coming months. However, it's unrealistic to expect that detailing cars, baby-sitting, painting, etc. will raise all the necessary monies for the trip by the end of February (that's when the balance is due). We have not set up a 503(c) organization and, as such, contributions are not tax-deductible for federal income tax purposes.
